Caballo Blanco

$300.00
sold out

A piece I made inspired by Diego Rivera's painting of Emiliano Zapata holding the reins of a white horse. A few years back, I was made aware of my grandfather's nickname in his neighborhood of Compton as El Caballo Blanco due to his striking white hair. I met my grandfather, but I do not know much about him. His legacy is shrouded in family secrets and trauma. In an attempt to honor him, I drew this picture.

I would see the Rivera rendition every day being advertised on the train platform while it was showing at the MoMA. My wife and I went to go see it, and it was absolutely stunning. I stared at it for a while, and I was overtaken with an urge to recreate just the head in my own way. I admire Diego Rivera as a Mexican artist, though he is mainstream. But whatever, I like what I like. I hope you like it and want to hang it in your crib. I priced this one higher than the rest, frankly, because I don't want to get rid of it.
